    Main purpose of the essay is to describe life and personality of F.C. Marmocchi, patriot of the italian Risorgimento and geographer. The research is focused on the important tribute that he gave to improve the knowledge of the american latin history in Italy, especially thanks to his major works: Raccolta di viaggi nel Nuovo Mondo (Travels anthologies to the New World), edited by himself around 1840. F.C. Marmocchi was a scholar in different areas of study, he was one of the first to highlight the development of the precolumbian cultures prior to the European colonisation of the America. He supported, of course, Latin America’s independence from Spain.El ensayo explica la figura y la obra de Francisco Constantino Marmocchi, patriota y geógrafo del Risorgimento. En particular se analiza la importante contribución de conocimiento sobre la historia y la realidad humana geográfica de América Latina -brindada en muchos casos por primera vez al público italiano- gracias a la rica antología Raccolta di viaggi nel Nuovo Mondo (Colección de viajesen el Nuevo Mundo) editado por él en los años cuarenta del siglo XIX.     A 2D Markerless Gait Analysis Methodology: Validation on Healthy Subjects

    A 2D markerless technique is proposed to perform lower limb sagittal plane kinematic analysis using a single video camera. A subject-specific, multisegmental model of the lower limb was calibrated with the subject in an upright standing position. Ankle socks and underwear garments were used to track the feet and pelvis segments, whereas shank and thigh segments were tracked by means of reference points identified on the model. The method was validated against a marker based clinical gait model. The accuracy of the spatiotemporal parameters estimation was found suitable for clinical use (errors between 1% and 3% of the corresponding true values). Comparison analysis of the kinematics patterns obtained with the two systems revealed high correlation for all the joints (0.82<R2<0.99). Differences between the joint kinematics estimates ranged from 3.9 deg to 6.1 deg for the hip, from 2.7 deg to 4.4 deg for the knee, and from 3.0 deg to 4.7 deg for the ankle. The proposed technique allows a quantitative assessment of the lower limb motion in the sagittal plane, simplifying the experimental setup and reducing the cost with respect to traditional marker based gait analysis protocols

    Kinematics of aimed movements in ecological immersive virtual reality: a comparative study with real world

    Virtual reality (VR) has recently emerged as a promising technology to rehabilitate upper limb functions after stroke. To promote the recovery of functions, retraining physiological movement patterns is essential. However, it is still unclear whether VR can elicit functional movements that are similar to those performed in the real world (RW). This study aimed to investigate the kinematics of reach-to-grasp and transport movements performed in the real world and immersive VR by examining whether kinematic differences between the two conditions exist and their extent. A within-subject repeated-measures study was conducted. A realistic setup resembling a supermarket shelf unit was built in RW and VR. The analysis compared reaching and transport gestures in VR and RW, also considering potential differences due to: (i) holding the controller needed to interact with virtual items, (ii) hand dominance, and (iii) target positions. Ten healthy young adults were enrolled in the study. Motion data analysis showed that reach-to-grasp and transport required more time in VR, and that holding the controller had no effects. No major differences occurred between the two hands. Joint angles, except for thorax rotation, and hand trajectory curvature were comparable across conditions, suggesting that VR has the potentialities to retrain physiological movement patterns. Results were satisfying, though they did not demonstrate the superiority of ecological environments in eliciting natural gestures. Further studies should determine the extent of kinematic similarity required to obtain functional gains in VR-based upper limb rehabilitation

    A Canine Gait Analysis Protocol for Back Movement Assessment in German Shepherd Dogs

    Objective-To design and test a motion analysis protocol for the gait analysis of adult German Shepherd (GS) dogs with a focus in the analyses of their back movements. Animals-Eight clinically healthy adult large-sized GS dogs (age, 4 +/- 1.3 years; weight, 38.8 +/- 4.2 kg). Procedures-A six-camera stereo-photogrammetric system and two force platforms were used for data acquisition. Experimental acquisition sessions consisted of static and gait trials. During gait trials, each dog walked along a 6 m long walkway at self-selected speed and a total of six gait cycles were recorded. Results-Grand mean and standard deviation of ground reaction forces of fore and hind limbs are reported. Spatial-temporal parameters averaged over gait cycles and subjects, their mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variance are analyzed. Joint kinematics for the hip, stifle and tarsal joints and their average range of motion (ROM) values, and their 95% Confidence Interval (CI) values of kinematics curves are reported. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-This study provides normative data of healthy GS dogs to form a preliminary basis in the analysis of the spatial-temporal parameters, kinematics and kinetics during quadrupedal stance posture and gait. Also, a new back movement protocol enabling a multi-segment back model is provided. Results show that the proposed gait analysis protocol may become a useful and objective tool for the evaluation of canine treatment with special focus on the back movement

    3D Microfluidic model for evaluating immunotherapy efficacy by tracking dendritic cell behaviour toward tumor cells

    Immunotherapy efficacy relies on the crosstalk within the tumor microenvironment between cancer and dendritic cells (DCs) resulting in the induction of a potent and effective antitumor response. DCs have the specific role of recognizing cancer cells, taking up tumor antigens (Ags) and then migrating to lymph nodes for Ag (cross)-presentation to naïve T cells. Interferon-α-conditioned DCs (IFN-DCs) exhibit marked phagocytic activity and the special ability of inducing Ag-specific T-cell response. Here, we have developed a novel microfluidic platform recreating tightly interconnected cancer and immune systems with specific 3D environmental properties, for tracking human DC behaviour toward tumor cells. By combining our microfluidic platform with advanced microscopy and a revised cell tracking analysis algorithm, it was possible to evaluate the guided efficient motion of IFN-DCs toward drug-treated cancer cells and the succeeding phagocytosis events. Overall, this platform allowed the dissection of IFN-DC-cancer cell interactions within 3D tumor spaces, with the discovery of major underlying factors such as CXCR4 involvement and underscored its potential as an innovative tool to assess the efficacy of immunotherapeutic approaches

    Quantum ESPRESSO is an integrated suite of computer codes for electronic-structure calculations and materials modeling, based on density-functional theory, plane waves, and pseudopotentials (norm-conserving, ultrasoft, and projector-augmented wave). Quantum ESPRESSO stands for "opEn Source Package for Research in Electronic Structure, Simulation, and Optimization". It is freely available to researchers around the world under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Quantum ESPRESSO builds upon newly-restructured electronic-structure codes that have been developed and tested by some of the original authors of novel electronic-structure algorithms and applied in the last twenty years by some of the leading materials modeling groups worldwide. Innovation and efficiency are still its main focus, with special attention paid to massively-parallel architectures, and a great effort being devoted to user friendliness.     The role of pharmacogenetics in the treatment of major depressive disorder: a critical review

    Pharmacological therapy represents one of the essential approaches to treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). However, currently available antidepressant medications show high rates of first-level treatment non-response, and several attempts are often required to find an effective molecule for a specific patient in clinical practice. In this context, pharmacogenetic analyses could represent a valuable tool to identify appropriate pharmacological treatment quickly and more effectively. However, the usefulness and the practical effectiveness of pharmacogenetic testing currently remains an object of scientific debate. The present narrative and critical review focuses on exploring the available evidence supporting the usefulness of pharmacogenetic testing for the treatment of MDD in clinical practice, highlighting both the points of strength and the limitations of the available studies and of currently used tests. Future research directions and suggestions to improve the quality of available evidence, as well as consideration on the potential use of pharmacogenetic tests in everyday clinical practice are also presented
